What is Dyscalculia?
Dyscalculia is the difficulty in understanding number sense and math concepts. It is as common as Dyslexia (Understood, 2021).
Finally, Singapore has our very own Dyscalculia Screener! D-SMD Screening Test can help to identify students who are at-risk of Dyscalculia and such diagnosis can help to direct students to the right avenue for intervention. Many children with Dyslexia have co-morbidities (i.e. Dyscalculia is often found in children with Dyslexia/ a child with ADHD can suffer from Dyscalculia as well). As children with Dyslexia often have poor comprehension of what they read, they face many challenges in understanding math questions as well.
Signs and Symptoms of Dyscalculia:
- difficulties with understanding comparatives (shortest vs longest, smallest vs biggest)
- difficulties with time, money, speed, distance concepts
- struggles with numbers, timetables, etc.
- struggles with recognising patterns
- often skip count
- struggles with understanding mathematical signs (+, -, x, /)
- trouble writing numerals

SHARING IS CARING! As Ms Cherie is not taking in children for Mathematics therapy interventions at this moment, parents whose child is facing difficulties with Mathematics can consider exploring this option. I am by no means affiliated to them, I just happen to be reading up and came across this page:

Hope the information is helpful!
