"We know that students derive more joy in learning, when they move away from memorisation, rote learning, drilling and taking high stakes exams. Very few students enjoy that." (Ong, Y. K., 2018)
In 2018, our Education Minister Ong Ye Kung talked about having a better balance between rigour and joy. Children with specific learning differences/ difficulties often do not find joy in learning. Take children with dyslexia for example. Reading and spelling tasks to them are already uphill tasks, let alone doing well in exams and having 'fun' in learning.
Ms Cherie upholds the vision for every child to cultivate the joy for learning. Phonics rules and literacy, drill and practice... Imagine having to execute the lessons in Chinese. Learning to read and spell are considered to be very mundane tasks and routines to most students. But in order to spark their interest and excitement, Ms Cherie tries her best to incorporate games into her teaching in every session. This has helped them to overcome their fears and difficulties with reading and spelling. Many of them look forward to her class every week!
